Internal Audit Internship

We’re looking for interns who want to “work hard, have fun, make history”!

Our intern program is an educational experience that provides interns with a high quality, challenging, exciting, and fun experience in local government. The goal of this internship program is not only to identify future talent for our audit shop, but to provide an educational internship for students that will provide them with firsthand professional experience of what it would be like to work in a local government auditing department.

Oakland is a major West Coast port city. The Port of Oakland is the busiest port for San Francisco Bay and all of Northern California. Oakland is the third largest city in the San Francisco Bay Area, the eighth-largest city in California, with a population of more than 400,000.

The Office of the City Auditor's mission is to serve as a model performance auditing organization that delivers in-depth, unbiased and meaningful results to the citizens of Oakland. We do this by identifying and auditing the areas of government most vulnerable to fraud, waste, abuse and mismanagement. Our office conducts audits and reviews of all areas of City government, provides analysis of upcoming City legislation, and manages the City’s Whistleblower Hotline.

As an intern, you will be integrally involved in the workings or our Office. As a team member on our audits, you will attend Entrance Conferences, interviews of auditees and others, conduct testing of controls and processes and develop workpapers to support our conclusions. You will also have the opportunity to attend public meetings of City Council, City Committee meetings, and speaking engagements with the Mayor and other officials.

This is an opportunity for interns to dive into higher level, impactful work that will expand their understanding of an internal audit department and the complexities of a large California municipality.

The internship will last from 8 to 12 weeks.  Applicants acknowledge this is an unpaid, volunteer position. For more information and to apply, please send your resume and cover letter to cityauditor[at]
